I swear that every book I am picking up from the YA section has a love triangle. There is always a poor, poor girl who can't choose between two gorgeous guys (meanwhile the world is ending). How can this be! She sees herself as some hideously ugly thing. Why couldn't she just be unwanted? Alone?
Bleh.
Writers, listen up. Before you stamp LOVE TRIANGLE to your manuscript, think about this:
Why is it called a love triangle? Why not a love V? It's not like the love interests are in love with each other too, right? Or maybe two dots connected with a line, plus an arrow pointing at one (For those where the MC's choice is obvious/shows no interest in other love interest)?
Is the love triangle important enough to be in the story? Is it needed? If not and you are still adding it to your story, is it at least not clouding up the pages?
Is your love triangle interesting enough to be there? Are you giving a good reason for why readers pay attention to an overused cliche? Are you adding something new? Like from one of the love interest's point-of-view?
Are you also going to be focusing on the negative effects of a love triangle, like how this would affect their relationships?
*claps* Well said!
