New Adult?

During my travels across the blogging world, I've stumbled upon this post here. I completely forgot to post about it until a few weeks later. Basically, writers and some publishers are trying to start up a category labelled "New Adult".

New Adult is a category put between YA and Adult. Novels put into this category are normally written for adults 18-26 yrs. This category has been suggested because it is a response to: Those who are uncomfortable seeing their upper YA novels next to the lower; those who ask an author to lower/raise the age of characters so it could fit into YA/Adult; those who complain that certain novels that are too mature for teenagers and too young for Adults.

If you would like to learn more about it, click here. I'm not sure about this new category and so far, I'm neutral about it. I will try to help spread around New Adult though.

Thoughts about New Adult? Do we need it? Are you against it or for it?

  1. I just heard about this new category for the first time. I'm not against the idea, per se, but I don't know how successful it will be, either. I think young adults are still going to be reading adult fiction or YA that pushes boundaries, and I think adults will still read YA. :)

I'm also not a huge fan of the actual term. I think "crossover adult" or other similar terms I've heard sound a little more appealing.

    1. Some bloggers have already set up a blog for New Adult called NA Alley. Rachel at Parajunkee had recently put up a paragraph on New Adult. It's only now that the category is gaining popularity.

"Crossover Adult" does sound much better. Maybe the name will change in time.

  2. I am all for this new category I just don't like the name. New Adult? Sounds like "New iPad", New Adult doesn't really tell you anything the same way that middle-grade, young-adult and adult actually do.

    1. I'm still on the fence for the name. Like Wendy said, Crossover Adult could be more appealing to readers.
